Keep in mind to always vet any potential rescue yourself which includes many things, all of which are listed in my article on how to adopt a dog properly.
First of all, you need to make sure a pug really fits into your life.
Who will train the dog? Is your pug never alone for more than 4 hours and if he is, do you have somebody to walk the dog in between? Can you afford vet bills, toys, food, and so on? Is your landlord okay? And many more questions.
That being said, you should always closely inspect the rescue too.
Is the shelter clean? Do they ask you questions? Is it a properly registered rescue instead of just a middleman for puppy mill pugs?

I'm trying to adopt a pug. I just did an online application. I didn't answer this many questions when I applied for my mortgage. It was an interrogation , and a redundant one at that. I'm trying to give a dog a home & these rescues would have you to believe they have the cure for cancer.

@Robert R Blevins, I feel the same way. Between all the questions and the home visit and reference check and fees. I might as well go buy a dog. I had a wonderful amazing pug from the time she was 10 weeks till she passed away. I did anything and everything for that dog. I finally feel ready to open my heart to a new dog and these rescues are ridiculous. It a super turn off

Hi Robert, I know what you're going through. But here's the thing: It's absolutely vital that shelters do a thorough screening because it's better to have the dog sit in the shelter than having them potentially shipped off to fighting rings, neglected (at least they're fed in the shelters and get training, human interaction etc. in good ones too), perhaps used as breeding stock for puppy mills which then inflates the problem even more etc.
However, when it gets ridiculous is when a shelter denies somebody interested in a rescue pug to adopt one because he has no huge yard (while having exercise opportunities outside).
Breeders are the same. To be honest, I'd request full transparency to give a good forever home and enough people will do that, I did too with my breeder and would've gone even further. It's a two-way street though, so feel free to ask them questions to weed out the bad eggs among shelters too!
