Costs to Own a Dog

How Much It Really

Commmitment

Dog ownership can be very expensive and it is a financial commitment for their lifetime. But how much does it actually cost to own a dog?

Puppy cost

Buying your puppy (or adult rescue) is just a tiny fraction of what a large breed dog will cost you over his lifetime.

When you bring your puppy home, he'll need a collar and/or harness, as well as a leash. Obviously, you're going to need the basics like food bowls, a dog bed and a brush, shampoo and so on.

Dog food can be really expensive

I currently feed my roughly 100-pound Rottweiler 2.5 pounds/day and pay around $3/pound which amounts to $220/month (raw diet).

Depending on where you live, you may have to pay a city tax for your dog. Insurance is also mandatory in some places. Vet visits really shouldn't be necessary, but sometimes they just are and need to be planned for.
